The Sisterhood Series

Inspiration for The Sisterhood

By Fern Michaels

I try to be well informed about world and national events so I keep at least two TV’s on all day.  I channel surf the news media because in order to truly be informed you have to sift through a lot of talking heads’ version of the truth.

Much like the main character Myra, I began to see a steady stream of people getting away with horrific crimes because of loopholes in the law and it made my blood boil.  If I couldn’t do anything to change it, I could at least vent my frustrations.  I knew I could not be the only one outraged by injustice and I believed there was a wide range of people out there who felt the same way— my own personal list is at least ten miles long.

Initially publishers were hesitant—and some refused to publish the books at all.  Fortunately my UK publisher had the same insight as I did and took a chance on publishing Weekend Warriors.  The response was overwhelming—the fan mail was flooding in and my US publisher decided that there was merit in what I was trying to achieve.  Readers wrote in with some of the most horrific “punishments” that even I couldn’t wrap around my frenzied brain! They told me why and how they wanted certain retribution—the details were astounding.  I had tapped into a “vigilante” consciousness.  I knew these women dreamed and plotted that ‘someday’ it would happen.  Yes, some of my core audience were startled, and some were aghast, but quickly it became obvious that the woman hasn’t been born that doesn’t want some kind of vengeance on someone for something.

The vast growth in readership is a testament to how women relate to that theme.  There have been 33 books published so far with 2 more coming in 2023.  Women are stronger, gutsier, more willing to step out of the box for what they want and that includes getting even for some wrong doing.  With nothing left to lose they are fearless.  I wanted to create a group who would exemplify these traits.  A group where people would ask in shock and amazement:   “Who the hell are these women?”

The Sisterhood: a group of women from all walks of life bound by friendship and a quest for justice. Armed with vast resources, top-notch expertise, and a loyal network of allies around the globe, the Sisterhood will not rest until every wrong is made right.
